Review Meeting

  • The Revenue Administration Commissioner reviewed flood mitigation and monsoon preparedness works in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts with officials from municipal corporations, Revenue, WRD and Highways departments.

Deadline for Works

  • Officials were instructed to complete major flood mitigation works before October 15, ahead of the Northeast Monsoon.

Storm-Water Drain Works

  • Kosasthalaiyar basin ADB storm-water drain project is nearly complete; the remaining 0.69 km is expected to be completed within two weeks.
  • Priority works in the Kovalam basin covering Sholinganallur, Perungudi and Alandur are to be completed before the monsoon.
  • Desilting is being carried out across 1,683 km of storm-water drains in Chennai; 1,328 km has been completed.
  • Connectivity works are being undertaken at 105 locations covering 922 metres.

Waterways & Waterbodies

  • Desilting and water-hyacinth removal remain incomplete in several GCC waterways, WRD canals, and the Cooum, Adyar and Buckingham Canal.
  • Of 83 waterbodies taken up for improvement, 51 have been completed, while work remains pending in 32.

Monsoon Preparedness

  • The GCC has allocated an estimated ₹100 crore for Northeast Monsoon preparedness works in its areas.

Public Participation

  • An online application has been developed to enable volunteers to register for flood-relief operations.
